If you have ever tried to use iPlayer abroad, perhaps while on vacation, travelling or working as an expat. You will of course have found that it does not work, all you get is a message telling you "Currently BBC iPlayer TV programs are available to play in the UK only..."

BUT it is really quite easy to get iPlayer abroad working just fine, I will highlight the solution I use here (it has worked every since iPlayer started and there is no reason for it to stop!).

Please take note that BBC iPlayer is funded through the UK TV license fee, if you don't have a TV license then you legally have no right to watch iPlayer abroad. The information here is offered for expats and UK travellers who have a TV license in the UK.

Using a Proxy and VPN service

Watch iPlayer Abroad

All you need is some software which makes it look like your computer is located in the UK, this can be done through a proxy server of VPN. There are plenty of free proxy servers available, or though they tend to be too slow for this application and there are certain security issues when using a public proxy server.

While I have tried the free methods I now use a private proxy and VPN application called Identity Cloaker. It was not originally designed with watching TV in mind; they don't even mention this use on their site. It was designed to hide your presence online from people checking up on you, As such it does EXACTLY what we need to watch BBC iPlayer abroad, and it hides our identity and makes it look like we are in the UK! So while you get to watch TV you also get a program to boost your online security!

Installation is simple, in fact you don't even have to install the program as it is happy running off of a USB flash drive.

There is a 10 day trial, so you can check it out for yourself how easy it is to watch iPlayer abroad. I have only found a few ISPs in the world who were too slow for it to work, in which case you will have NO options to watch iPlayer abroad. The free trial is of no use to you as it does not let you test the TV element, it is too restricted. They no NOT auto rebill you when your subscription expires and you do however get a 14 day money back guarentee, so there is nothing to lose!

Use the proxy option to view programs live, or switch to VPN and have the choice of live viewing AND downloading from iPlayer while abroad.

There are some videos below showing you how the software works, you  learn even more about it at www.GetTVabroad.com
