Using Identity Cloaker
If you want to watch BBC iPlayer abroad it is really quite easy, you can even do it with free software though it is harder to use and the result not always consistent.
Your best option is to use a subscription based VPN/Proxy service, as you will then get guaranteed levels of service as well as support. If you have to choose between VPN and Proxy then its normally better to select VPN. Why? Well by using a VPN you have the option to download TV from BBC iPlayer, plus you can also use services from 4oD, Sky, TVCatchup and Zattoo all of which do not work with the proxy options.
However if you use Identity Cloaker you don't have to choose as for the same low subscription (less than 7 euros a month) you get both UK VPN and Proxy services. You also get a VPN and Proxy service in the USA, Canada, and Germany to name a few as well as increased surfing security (which is what Identity Cloaker was originally designed for!).
Setting Up Identity Cloaker
After you download Identity Cloaker you will need to install and set it up, now you don't actually have to install the software as it can run from a USB flash stick if you prefer. This is a useful option if you want to use the program on several computers, or even take it with you to an Internet cafe (remember the main use of Identity Cloaker is to hide yourself online, you don't have to use it just for watching TV!).
Once installed run the program, enter your user name and password sent when you signed up, select the UK from the drop down list and away you go!

If you want to download from BBC iPlayer you will need to use the VPN function, you will see this in top right of the program (see screen shot to the right).
Simply click on the 'Launch OpenVPN' button within Identity Cloaker, enter your password and you will be connected to the UK via a VPN link rather than a proxy. You will see a new connection box near your system clock that looks like two TV screens, this shows you the VPN is working.
You can now download programs, or watch 4oD, Zattoo or any of the other services which require the VPN method to work.

Does not work on MACs
Mari actually if you contact them they have a beta release version for MAC, the developers are working hard at bringing this great tool fully to the Mac world. Its not yet advertised on their site though.
Yep, I've tried the Beta on the MAC it works fine. Takes a few minutes to set up but nothing too difficult.

Identity Cloaker is no longer free, a paid for service
Sheperd it never was free, they have a simple free trial but that is only to test if the principle works for you.
Their are free options, but for me the effort of making them work is simply not worth it when I can pay a few euro and have somebody else do the effort!
The Identity Cloaker normal trial has a small fee and lasts for 10 days with full functionality, there is no auto renewal or sneaky charges. Email the guy who makes it, he is very upfront about how everything.
Does is work with the Mac ?
The Mac version is, I am amazed to say, still in Beta! You can contact the owners of Identity Cloaker directly to get a copy of the beta
Does it work when your Internet connection is distributed within your home via a router?

Does that also work for the UK i-tunes store and BBC podcasts via i-tunes?
@Rudi - you can access itunes without a proxy, I used it for ages as until the recent price reduction it was much cheaper than Australian iTunes. Most BBC podcasts work anyway too, I listen to the F1 ones on my iPhone without a proxy.
Hi... do you have a Mac version please?
The Mac version has never been officially released, however users are able to take a trial and then contact support to test the Mac version out. A number of people have been using it for quite sometime.
